Hale County School Notes

During New Year's week the writer had the opportunity of visiting the schools of Hale Center and Plainview.

At Hale Center we found Mr. B. D. Woodlee, principal; Miss Julia Price, first assistant, and Miss Virgie Frye in charge of the primary department, all very busy at work.

The primary pupils under Miss Frye were as busy as bees; the intermediate grades under the management of Miss Price were equally busy, and the advanced grades under the instruction of Mr. Woodlee are as fine a lot of students as it has ever been our privilege to see.

At Plainview the following teachers were at work with no less enthusiasm than those of Hale Center: Mr. S. W. Meharg, principal;  Miss Lula Pitts, first assistant;  Miss Alice Beasley, second assistant, and Miss May McClellan, primary department.

Plainview now has the best school it has ever had, so say the patrons and pupils. They have incorporated for school purposes, voted bonds, and now have the foundation laid for anew and commodious school building that will be second to none in the Western part of Texas.

Keep your eye on the "Llano Estacado;" she's coming to the front, educationally and otherwise. J.M.B.

From the Gainesville Signal:

The Bulcher school, under the management of J. C. Cox and Miss Dora Short, is progressing nicely with good attendance. The little folks think Miss Dora the grandest teacher they ever had.

Sam Briggs was up from Burns Saturday and made us a pleasant call and renewed his subscription.  He reports a fine school with an enrollment of ninety pupils and is well pleased with his work.

Other Notes:

Mr. J. D. Clary has resigned as co-principal of the University Training School at Terrell.

Miss Tommie Black, of Paris, Texas, takes a position in the Wm B. Travis School of Dallas.

Misses Josie Robertson, of Galveston, and Vera Bailey, have been elected supernumeraries in the Dallas city schools.

The Southwestern University has given a free scholarship to the State Federation of Women's Clubs. This scholarship has just been awarded to Miss Lizzie Runkle of Caldwell. She is a graduate of the public school at Caldwell, class of '95.
