Joe Rear Obituary

The following is an obituary of my grandfather, printed in the Centerville Daily Iowegian around June 26th, 1933.

JOE REAR , LONG TIME MERCHANT, TAKEN BY DEATH

Long Sickness Ends for Man Who operated Store in Brazil For 34 Years

Joseph Rear, for 34 years a merchant at Brazil, Iowa., and the stepfather of Jake Ritter of this city; died at his home here at 423 East Buren street following two years of illness, at 3:50 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Rear had lived in Brazil and Centerville for a period of 40 years, having retired 6 years ago, coming here to make his home.

Mr. Rear was born in Lincolnshire , England, and came to the United States when 23 years of age, first settling near Guthrie Center, Iowa.  He came to Brazil a short time later and there met and married Mrs. Margaret A. Ritter. To this union three sons were born, George and Joe of Urbana, Illinois, and Glen of Danville. Beside the children of his marriage Mr. Rear leaves four stepdaughters and one stepson.

Mr. Rear was the last of his family. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Odd Fellows Encampment.  He attended the Methodist Church.  Due to his wide acquaintance Mr. Rear's death comes as a great sorrow to many of his friends here and elsewhere.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 10:00a.m. from the Methodist Church with the Rev. L. H. Lanning officiating. Burial will be made in Oakland cemetery. The remains may be viewed at the Beckner Funeral Home.

June 26, 1933.
