Alonzo Pierce 1893 William Martin BIGGS February 21, 1925 Lovelock, Pershing County, Nevada. Lone Mountain Cemetery, Pershing County, Nevada A Civil War Gravestone in the family plot had Jackson BIGGS. In the plot was Anna Cora Taylor Biggs. The gravestone had Annie C. Biggs. She was my Great Grand mother, also in the plot was Alice Myrtle Biggs, Annie's daughter, my Grandmothers sister. I had no idea where my Great Grand Father's grave was or where he was buried. Had looked for 10 years. All those who might have know were now gone. Finally I found the truth. William Martin had joined the Union Army in 1864 as a subsitute for his cousin Jackson Biggs. He enlisted on Oct 25, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois. as a private in Company H - 51st Regiment, Illinois Infantry. at Camp Butler, Illinois. In the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee, he was returning from the skirmish line under pursuit, driving a Caisson. (a two wheeled wagon carried shot and powder, towing a cannon) when he approached the battlements (his line) he overtook some prisoners, overturning the Caisson, and being trampled by the Battery Team, injuring his neck, arm, and spine. He was an invalid after that all his life. He was discharged from duty at Fort Irwin, Texas and formally discharged at Camp Butler in Illinois as Corporal on November 25th, 1865. He then married Anna Cora Taylor on May 31, 1868 in Moultrie County, Illinois. Lived there a few years, then moved to Elko County, Nevada to Plesant Valley, purchased a ranch, and my Grandmother was born there, with two other children, then he sold his ranch and moved to Pershing County, (then was Humboldt County, Nevada to the Upper Valley, near Lovelock, the county seat. Where he purchased another ranch. When he died in 1925, as he enlisted in the Union Army as Jackson Biggs, and drew a Civil War Pension as Jackson Biggs, (went by both Jackson Biggs and William Martin Biggs) when he died the Veterans group that buried him, by law had to place the name Jackson Biggs on the Tombstone. He was there all these years of looking, until I received the records from my great Aunt's son, last year, mystery solved. Under the Tombstone "Jackson Biggs" is WILLIAM MARTIN BIGGS" my Great Grandfather. ------------------------------------------------- Perhaps this information will help any relatives searching for William, perhaps the family of Jackson Biggs, who I have no information on myself.
