Dudley E. Blaise Jr. (John Snyder Blaise Shepherd) April 2, 2002 Springfield, Missouri Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Springfield John Snyder Blaise Shepherd was born Dudley Eugene Blaise y Snyder [Mexican birth certificate]on October 3, 1937 at the American Hospital in Mexico City. He was the son of the former Clara Olive Snyder and Dudley E. Blaise, residents of Guanajuato, Gto., Mexico, where the Blaise family owned and operated the El Cedro Silver Mining Company. He was named Dudley E. Blaise Jr., which name was registered with the American Embassy. After his father deserted the family while he was still an infant, he was called "John." He was the stepson of Charles M. Shepherd, director/treasurer of the Empire District Electric Company, Joplin, Missouri. He was a grandson of Mabel Mitchell Snyder and John Abbott Snyder, founder/owner of the Snyder Bus Company, Missouri-Arkansas line, purchased by Crown Coach Company in 1931. Mr. Shepherd attended Joplin schools. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1955, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and SPQR, editor of The Spyglass and a captain in the R.O.T.C. He was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Joplin, where he served as an altar boy during his youth. He was also an assistant scout master at First Presbyterian Church in Joplin. During his college days he worked as a Springfield, Missouri newcaster and as a lifeguard at Southwest Missouri State College. He attended Missouri Southern State University, Kansas State University, Southwest Missouri State University and the University of Oklahoma, where he received a B.S. degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. In 1966 he was operated for a BRAIN TUMOR at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, and at the Mayo Clinic. During the second surgery he suffered a stroke, leaving him with gross facial paralysis, inability to blink in one eye, deaf in one ear, and with seizures. He was reoperated (third surgery) at Parkland Hospital in Dallas in about 1978, according to records. He was never again seen by his family. Apparently he became disoriented and unable to effectively communicate verbally, as the tumor was on the left side of his head, and he probably suffered brain damage as a result of the surgeries. He died homeless in Springfield, where he apparently had been an occasional overnight resident of Victory Mission. However, it seems he sometimes was forced to sleep on the floor because the Mission, which receives millions in dollars from the government and private charities only has 30 beds, according to a Victory spokesperson. While residing at the mission he had several falls during seizures and was also badly beaten by another tenant, for which he was hospitalized. According to medical records received during the spring of 2004 by his brother, who was not notified of his death until 2004, he had been admitted to the emergency rooms of Cox Hospital and St. John's Hospital in Springfield many, many times over the year, always discharged onto the streets, homeless, only occasionally receiving overnight lodging at the Victory Mission or the Missouri Hotel (also a mission). He was also a patient at the Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, according to Cox Medical Records, which revealed for the first time his surgery ar Parkland Hospital in Dallas in 1978. Although officials connected with the Victory Mission had the name, address and phone number of his brother, his brother was not notified of his last hospitalizations and death. Both Victory Mission and Missouri Hotel officials have been uncooperative in releasing information. His body was received by the Lohmeyer Funeral Home and cremated by the order of the State of Missouri. No services were held. No effort was made to contact his surviving brother, Thomas M. Blaise Shepherd, whose phone number and address Victory Mission officials had. Physicians from the Mayo Clinic claim my brother's tumor, which was operated on in 1966 had apparently been growing for many years, perhaps from early childhood. They claime they removed tumorous mass the sideze of a "small grapefruit" and that they were unable to cut the roots, with the prognosis that the tumor could continue growing and affect his ability to communicate and to swallow, which apparently is exactly what did happen. I witnessed my brother, John, being stabbed in the head on the left side just above the ear by a neighbor, Jim Dailey, when my brother was a small child. I also witnessed my brother being hit on the left side of hishead by a rock thrown by another neighbor Tommy Havens while my brother was riding his bicyle, causing him to lose his balance and fall off his bicycle onto a curb on North Sergeant Ave. Although Mrs. Havens called an ambulance and later came to our home at 412 North Moffet to inquire on my brother's condition, neither her son nor his father ever expressed concern, remorse, or apologized. My brother was picked on constantly because our father had deserted us for another woman, Alice LeRoi Jordan, by whom he father another son, two years younger than I, and because our mother had to be away from home earning a living to support us. During World War II she traveled in a car pool to Fort Crowder to work as a typist, arising at about 3:30 a.m. and not getting back home until late afternoon. She later was FORCED to take a job traveling as a theatrical director/fund raiser for civic organizations because Joplin businesspeople, including James E. Harsh, chairman/president of the Empire District Electric Company and Dr. Sam Grantham, for whom she worked would not pay her a sufficient salary to support her family. We were reared by our Grandmother Snyder, who was also shown disrespect by other children, including the Eberle boy and the Perkins family, who lived across the street, because she was an elderly lady. And she was a lady, a member of Women of Rotary and The Century Club, who volunteered for the Red Cross during World War II. Dennis Eberle, son of Jean Eberle and Delpha Rogers Eberle, gave my grandmother "the finger." My grandmother once had to call the police because Charles Perkins and his friends, including Terry Lacy, were throwing mud balls with rocks in them at my grandmother's house and because Mrs. Perkins, whose husband was an IBM representative, refused to discipline her son. Anyone who is willing to supply Dudley E. Blaise Jr.'s brother, Tom, with more information, PLEASE contact me at the below e-mail address. One more commentary, an Episcopal clergyman from Joplin later revealed had been contacted by a Dallas social worker following my brother's surgery in 1978 after he had gone missing, yet he refused to give that information to me, including the name and exact location of the hospital, and he was very "curt" and uncooperative when Mrs. Elizabeth Nolan Wilson of Joplin contacted the clergyman, David Patrick, to try to help locate my brother. I consider Patrick's behavior inexcusable. My brother's life and death is an American trajedy. Thomas M. Antonia lived in my home years ago with her first husband Bernardo. Bernardo passed on and so Antonia, so I was told went to Italy to find herself another husband. She came back to her home and as it turns out, with as much as she loved this home, she had to move back to Italy because the new man of the house was unable to adjust to the changes and the language and so on. She used to send my neighbor across the street cards every Christmas and Easter and about 4 years ago, around the time I moved in Antonia's old house; 2 owners later, the cards stopped coming to my neighbor. Things have happened around the house to let me know that I am not alone when I am the only one in the house as cheesy as this might seem. My son has just recently been seeing someone who keeps dropping by. He's starting to get used to it now, I'm trying to help him through this as best I can. However it would be very helpful to know more about this lady who comes to see me and my 2 children. The lady whom my almost 3 year old son can see (most times in broad day light) and just the other night had been having conversations with in the middle of the night. Yes, heard whispers then my son would talk and then whispers again of an older voice and then my son would talk again. I went to his room to check on him and he was standing in the middle of the room and stopped cold not saying a word. Then he said that "na na monster" was there in the window and would I check. "Na na monster is what he has called her since he first saw her and when showed a picture of her that my neighbor across the street had of her. He could not name anyone one else in the photo of my neighbors family standing with her, but when I pointed to her, he smiled and said "na na". Ok, I hope someone will be able to help. I don't fear what is happening, I am very open about it. Thanks for your time, any suggestions would be helpful!!!
